CHILD SUPPORT
In the State of Utah, every child has the right to financial support from both parents. That obligation will continue until the age of 18 or graduation with the regular high school class unless a court orders otherwise.
The law also requires that the support be paid through income withholding unless the court finds that it is not in the best interests of the child.
Support is calculated by using the incomes of both parents and plugging that information into the guideline table. The parent who has physical custody of the child provides their support through providing for the child's needs in the home. The parent without physical custody contributes to the child by paying child support.
In order to calculate your support obligation you will need:
- Current income information for each parent. If you only have tax information, that parent's income should be calculated by dividing the amount by 12 to get a monthly amount. If you are paid every other week, the amount must be multiplied by 26 and divided by 12 to get the monthly amount.
- Verification of other child support obligations each parent is ordered to pay.
- Verification of other alimony a parent is ordered to pay.
- If a parent has children in a present household for whom the parent wants to receive credit, you will need verification of the income of the spouse in the present household.
- The number of persons (including the children in this case) who are covered on medical insurance and the total cost for insurance
